Quitcherbitchin'...You've been Served.
Lately I've done a lot of whining and moaning about my health issues. Sorry. There have been other things happening that are blog worthy.
Like the "talkin' to" I got from a Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center employee yesterday. During the route I had to run yesterday afternoon I ended up having a 30 minute layover at the Casino. So just as I was told to do during training I made the loop around the employee parking lot and parked on the outer edge closest to the interstate and set up shop for my break.
I was playing a mean round of Angry Birds on my new iPhone 4 when I noticed an older black lady making a beeline for the bus. I'd been parked for maybe around 5-8 minutes...just enough time to get really engrossed in the flinging of birds at pigs with the swish of my finger.
As she approached the bus I could tell she was irritated and ready to vent. I opened the door for her and that's when she unleashed her fury.
"Excuse me miss but you are supposed to pick up passengers down there, by the back door. Every driver picks us up down there. And you're early... are you new?"
"Yes ma'am I'm new, but I am on my lunch break and not leaving for at least another 20 minutes."
"So you want me to walk back over there, wait for you? I don't think so. You want me to pay now or later when you're ready to leave?"
Taken slightly aback by her attitude I simply gestured at the fare box and tried to end the sassy situation right there. But she wasn't done yet. No no... not by a long shot.
"I don't know who teaches you new people how to do things but this is the third Saturday in a row I've had to walk across that parking lot in this heat. I mean, the rest of the drivers know to pick us up down there by the door." as she's scrounging for change she continues, "and they're never here this early. They don't usually get us until around twenty after or so. Then we just head on out."
After letting her go on in her bitchy tone I finally spoke up when silence fell for a moment.
"Ma'am I'm sorry you had to cross the parking lot. But maybe the other drivers' who have been here longer just take their lunch break up at the Wal-Mart parking lot where there are stores and restaurants. I figured since I wasn't hungry or in need of buying anything today I'd just head down here, observe a race or two and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the Wal-Mart. I mean, during training I was told to do what this paper said (as I pointed to my drivers' schedule) and for this particular route it says to be here at the track at this time (pointing more specifically). So that's what I did. I'm new, best to stay out of trouble." I chuckled and she kinda blankly stared at me like she was really trying hard to process what I'd just said.
Finally putting her fare in the box she shuffled back to a seat and sat quiet for the rest of MY lunch break. To make her happy I swung back down by the employee door and paused long enough to make sure no one else wanted a ride. No one did. She was a lone rider for nearly the entire trip back into town.
I bet she calls in and says I was either super nice or super rude. Either way, it made for an interesting little run. She thought she served me when in reality, I am pretty sure I served her. :P
