Five Months (and one day) Old
Yesterday marked Starfish's fifth month of life. (applause, confetti, etc)
Poor thing was a right mess over it too. Crabby as can be... wait'll she turns 30, 40, 50 etc. If she is as crabby about it then as she was yesterday, she's got a long dreadful collection of birthdays ahead of her.
Of course, I know at five months old she doesn't know that she's getting older. She barely knows her own name... so her crabbiness was certainly not aging induced.
No, she was just cranky for no reason at all.
Well, not NO reason, she is still teething and growing and learning to be human at lightening speeds.
Which really would make anyone crabby.
Heck I get crabby just thinking about it.
Last week we went on our first trip to the local public library. It's a fabulous old building with 4 floors of literature of all kinds. The third floor is the children's library, which was where we were heading for a Baby & Me activity group.
I wasn't sure what to expect and certainly not sure how Starfish would handle the social situation. But it was pretty exciting for both of us. It is a half hour program every week wherein we sing songs and say rhymes with our little ones. We dance and play and then at the end, they turn on the bubble machine and the kids go crazy over the abundance of bubbles filling the room.
It's for ages birth through a year and a half. Starfish was one of the youngest, with only one other baby under 6 months of age. Most of them were toddling about, a bit wobbly yet, but fairly mobile. I'd say that there were about 8 babies and mommies there, including us.
After the group ended we went and signed up for library cards, the both of us as I've not had I valid card since I was in high school. Then we scoped out the baby books and picked out "Giggle Giggle Quack", which was fairly entertaining the first time we read it but lost it's luster quickly. We also checked out a DVD by the Baby Einstein group called Baby Beethoven.
The first attempt at watching it resulted in a massive meltdown on Starfish's behalf. I had put it on and was doing some chores, thinking the 28 minute program would keep her entertained long enough for me to fold laundry and put the bed linens back on. But no. She lasted about 5 minutes before flipping out.
I just ended up turning it off and finding something else for she and I to do that calmed her and cheered her up.
The next day I decided I wanted to knit a bit on the scarf I'm trying to make her before the cooler weather hits and thought I'd try the DVD again. This time no tears, but after paying attention to it, I can see why the first time freaked her out.
It was a bit much to take in, even as an adult. The amount of stimuli given in that short period of time, even just the first five minutes which she had managed the day before, was extremely overwhelming.
I think the first try at watching it she was simply already overtired and her brain just couldn't handle it. I know that the second try was much more successful, she even smiled and cooed and seemed to enjoy it, because she'd already had a good nap behind her and could more easily digest the stimulus.
We return both the book and DVD this week before the next Baby & Me group. Then we'll just go back to good old "Goodnight Moon" and mommy's unhealthy addiction to Netflix.
Aside from baby stuff, which is all encompassing these days, we have started the full on kitchen remodel. I may have mentioned before about it, but it's in full swing now. The existing makeshift kitchen was moved into the basement while the new kitchen is being installed. It's a long, arduous process since the hubby really only has weekends to do the majority of the work. But it's already coming along nicely.
He's repairing the floor and prepping it for tile. He's run all new plumbing and electrical wiring, put in insulation, and we'd already replaced windows. We've picked out cabinets but haven't purchased them yet. As well as counter tops, appliances, and such.
We went to an annual auction this past Saturday where we scored a few items for the kitchen at unbeatable bargains. We got a brand new garbage disposal that they sell at Lowe's for $250 for a mere $85. And we got a nearly $300 enameled cast iron sink for $55. We also snagged two hanging light fixtures, $50 for the pair that probably cost about $400 for the pair at a retail store. And we got two windows for our sun room off the master bedroom at insanely cheap prices.
Windows have been our biggest score at the auction for three years running now. Last year we got a $1000 window for $75. Score!
But this year I'd say we did great. We guesstimated that we saved ourselves close to $1500 on the items we purchased this year. Too bad the auction only happens once a year.
Starfish did great at the auction, too. We were there a good part of the day. She napped about an hour and a half in the middle of it and took two meals to-go (aka in the car in the parking lot). While she was awake she was happy as could be to be there. So many people to watch and things to see. And it seemed that everyone wanted to say hello and try to elicit a smile or giggle from her, so she was at the very least, entertained.
It's a shame she spent the rest of the weekend in Crabbsville. But that's just how it goes, I suppose.
