Pee-S-A
Okay. Listen up folks. This is for every one's benefit. Consider it a
Public Service Announcement.
1) Knock.
This was probably a lesson your mother and/or father taught you at a very young age. A lesson to be applied where any and all doors are concerned. It protects you and whomever might be behind said closed door(s) from any embarrassing situations.
2) Check for feet.
Doing a quick crouch to check for just feet inside the stall is simple and less invasive than just pushing or pulling open a door to see if a whole person is sitting on the toilet.
Either of these options are acceptable in any public restroom at any time of day. Use of both options doubles your chances of avoiding embarrassment.
If for some reason you feel compelled to forgo either of these preventative procedures, do not... I repeat DO NOT get pissed off at the person inside the stall who bars your entry by either pulling or pushing the door back into the closed position. Accept responsibility for your actions, as you are the party at fault.
There ARE going to be occasions where the locking mechanism on the stall door does not function as it should. It is NOT the occupants' fault that the lock has failed to perform it's duty.
If you happen to find yourself on the inside of a breached stall door, you DO NOT need to apologize for protecting your privacy by any means necessary. It is not your fault that the person on the outside of the stall door did not do a proper check for occupancy before perpetrating the breach.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming....

In my case, I'd remain very quiet and listen.
If I heard high heels the panic would set in!
